While looking through your pictures at Sushi Zen, I was in awe. I've never seen a Hamachi that color; it seems almost as though its a piece of Otoro. Simply amazing. As well, that is my first time seeing Uni served without a piece of nori wrapped around the rice. It seems the itamae-san at this place has an interesting way of doing things. Also, that color of the Ikura is absolutely jaw-dropping.

I'll have to put this restaurant onto my to-eat list as I plan to go-to Hokkaido sometime in the near future. I'm curious though as to the seating capacity of Sushi Zen and whether you needed reservations or had to wait at all?

I saw that post and I remember thinking Tojo's is EXPENSIVE. So aside from an inflated sense of self worth, which is always good for a few laughs, I'm not sure what else Tojo-san offers. Good thing we're planning to head back to Sapporo this year.

ET, read Sherman's recent review of his trip to Tojo's (http://www.shermansfoodadventures.com/2010/07/tojos.html) -- which came to around $200-$250 per person. Looking at the food he got and reading the descriptions, personally, I think it was way, way overpriced. The food didn't strike me as particularly creative, the technique and execution not particularly brilliant.

We loved it there Petti; pretty sure you and H will love it too. In fact, we're seriously thinking about going back this year, drive up to Otaru maybe, and spend a couple of nights in a ryokan with an onsen.

Great review!

Given the calibre of the restaurant, plus multiples of the uni, ikura, otoro, hamachi, kinki and hotaebi, it came in below CAD $240 (including beer and matcha). Compared to what I’ve heard about Tojo’s prices (I imagine Tojo’s must play in the same class of restaurants – I haven’t been), and the fact that we had kinki and otoro, it isn’t completely out of whack. And I have not had higher quality fish anywhere else.

It does, doesn't it? At least one other Japanese restaurant does Tamago this way - Urasawa of Beverly Hills. Urasawa is definitely a place we'd be looking to try soon...

That's Japanese-English for you :-) And oh yes, the sushi was mind-blowing. I finally understand what that means now...
