P, when we were there, they had one person in the front of house and one person in the kitchen. So yeah, if they had a crowd, I can imagine the food would take a while to arrive.

As for authenticity - I grew up in Singapore and I found the some of the food here to be authentic enough. Perhaps certain dishes you tried were off (like our tahu goreng and ice kachang for instance...)

Went there some time ago - the food took forever to get to us & when it arrived, it was a rip off! It is not authentic & not well run. Will never go there again

I think my friend was just trying to force me to eat another dish that night, knowing full well I was maxed out and tried to pass that rojak as a after-meal item. :) Being it was my first time seeing that dish, I was an easy target for his highjinx.

Singaporean cuisine is wonderful for its variety and interesting melds of Chinese, Malay and Indian food to me. I have a few more posts from the region to get to, hope you stop by our site to check them out in the time ahead...

Thanks Shokutsu. Your Singaporean host has a pretty interesting take on rojak indeed :-) ; I would consider it an appetizer or maybe an amuse (in much smaller quantities), but it would never cross my mind to classify rojak as a dessert. I see from your blog that you had been introduced to other Singaporean dishes besides rojak - how do the flavours agree with you?

Very informative and educational post, thanks for sharing. I too often fall into the habit of trying out places that I've ignored for ages and pass by daily in my car. More often than not though, it turns into a miss.

I was first introduced to rojak in Singapore on a recent trip there. My Singaporean host told me that this was a dessert, since we'd already eaten our main meals that evening. Interesting that it is such a mix of ingredients, and hence really definable as a salad. The sweetness of the fruit must have been the reason he tried explaining it to me as a dessert.
